What does 진짜 (jinjja) mean? — and why jinjja.shop?

Part of the jinjja.shop guides — plain answers about independent Korean makers, for buyers in Australia. Last updated 1 October 2026.

What does 진짜 (jinjja) mean in Korean?

진짜 (jinjja) means real or really in Korean. It can be used in most situations to say ‘really’, and more literally it means ‘real’ and ‘genuine’, as opposed to its antonym ‘fake’.

The word is built from 진 (jin, from the Chinese character 眞 meaning ‘truth’) combined with the suffix -짜 (-jja). The opposite of 진짜 is 가짜 (gajja), meaning ‘fake’.

진짜 is more casual and often used in spoken language, while its near-synonym 정말 (jeongmal) is slightly more formal and used in both speech and writing. To say ‘really’ in a sentence, simply add 진짜 before the word you want to emphasise; both 진짜 and 정말 mean ‘really’ or ‘truly’ and are used to add emotion or emphasis in everyday conversation.

How is 진짜 used as a question?

The expression 진짜? in Korean means ‘Really?’ — it is commonly used to express surprise, doubt, or to seek confirmation.

You can also use it to question whether something is real, as in ‘Are you for real?’ Like many Korean nouns, the word can also be used as a determiner to modify another noun directly — for example, 진짜 목적 (jinjja mokjeok) means ‘real purpose’.

Why is jinjja.shop called that?

jinjja.shop (진짜샵) is an Australian online marketplace, based in Brisbane, Queensland, for independent, owner-run Korean brands. The name is chosen deliberately: the shop sells what the word describes — real things from real Korean makers.

Every brand on the site has its own maker, story and identity. Brands are chosen one at a time and dealt with directly. The filter is not team size; it is authenticity — each brand must make its products in South Korea to be accepted.

You can browse all the brands at jinjja.shop/brands-index.

Is jinjja.shop connected to Jinjja Chicken, Jinjja Jokbal or any restaurant?

No. jinjja.shop is not a restaurant and has no affiliation with Jinjja Chicken, Jinjja Jokbal or any other food or hospitality business that uses the word jinjja in its name. It is purely an online retail marketplace for Korean-made goods, shipped to Australia.

Because 진짜 is a common, everyday Korean word meaning ‘real’, it appears in many unrelated business names — the shared word is the only connection.

How do you pronounce 진짜?

진짜 is romanised as jinjja and pronounced roughly jin-jja, with a short ‘i’ sound as in ‘pin’ and a tense (doubled) ‘j’ sound on the second syllable — closer to the ‘j’ in ‘jump’ held a fraction longer. The doubled consonant ㅉ is one of Korean’s tense consonants; it has no direct English equivalent but is noticeably crisper than a single ㅈ.

The polite form, 진짜요 (jinjjayo), is used when speaking to someone older or someone you are not close with.
