What Does “Bifida Ferment Filtrate” Mean on an Ingredient List?

Bifida Ferment Filtrate is the standard cosmetic ingredient name (INCI name) for the liquid left over after Bifidobacterium bacteria have been fermented and then filtered out. The name tells you three things: which microorganism was used, that it was fermented, and that it was filtered.

What does each word mean?

  • Bifida: short for Bifidobacterium, a group of lactic-acid-producing bacteria.
  • Ferment: the bacteria were grown in a nutrient broth and allowed to ferment it.
  • Filtrate: the bacteria were then filtered out, and what remains is the liquid broth with everything the fermentation produced.

What is the difference between Bifida Ferment Filtrate and Bifida Ferment Lysate?

A filtrate is the liquid with the bacteria removed. A lysate is made by breaking the bacterial cells open, so it contains the cells’ own contents. Both are listed on labels; they are different ingredients.

What other “ferment” ingredients will I see on Korean skincare?

  • Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate: from a yeast, one of the best-known ferment ingredients in skincare.
  • Saccharomyces Ferment: from yeast, the same family used for bread and beer.
  • Lactobacillus Ferment: from lactic acid bacteria, the family found in yoghurt and kimchi.

The further up the list a ferment appears, the more of it the product contains. How ferments relate to probiotic and postbiotic labels.

Which Korean product is mostly Bifida Ferment Filtrate?

Dr. Oasis Lab’s Supergen Triple Glow Gel Mist is 81% Bifida Ferment Filtrate, so it is far and away the main ingredient. It also contains T3 Reallagen® and 1% third-generation Biome PDRN. It is a hydrogel spray that settles on the skin as a veil instead of evaporating. It is sold in Australia on jinjja.shop for A$39.
